We鈥檇 harvest the berries, and my grandmother would prepare it for us all.鈥</p> <p>Sherman, a member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe, spoke about the evolution of his culinary philosophy and his mission to redefine Indigenous cuisine in the modern era. 鈥淚 had to identify what it meant to me to identify pre-colonial foods,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not trying to cook like it鈥檚 1491. I鈥檓 a futurist, not a traditionalist.鈥</p> <p>The conversation at the Oct. 8 event was moderated by executive chef and culinary director for 国产传媒 Dining Anthony Pangelina, who guided the discussion through Sherman鈥檚 early influences, the founding of NATIFS and his work to promote Native food sovereignty.</p> <p>In a moment that drew laughter from the audience, Sherman recounted the frequent question he receives about his award-winning Minneapolis restaurant, Owamni. 鈥淧eople ask how they can get a reservation at my sold-out restaurant,鈥 he said with a smile. 鈥淚 tell them 鈥業 don鈥檛 know, I just grew up on one.鈥欌</p> <p>The event opened with a performance by Medicine For My Sisters, a women鈥檚 drum group whose rhythmic songs set a powerful tone for the evening. Following the conversation, guests enjoyed a reception featuring Indigenous dishes prepared by 国产传媒 Dining chefs using recipes from Sherman鈥檚 鈥淭he Sioux Chef鈥檚 Indigenous Kitchen,鈥 including cedar-braised bison, three sisters mash and maple-sage roasted vegetables.</p> <p>鈥淔lavors &amp; Stories鈥 is part of 国产传媒 Dining鈥檚 Food for Thought speaker series, created by Executive Chef Mitch Vanagten. It fosters conversations around food, culture and sustainability. The collaboration will give undergraduate students in the pathway the opportunity to complete immersive, eight-week clinical experiences alongside physicians in a range of specialties, bringing them one step closer to their goal of serving communities throughout the Valley.</p> <p>鈥淭his collaboration is a meaningful expansion of our students鈥 exposure to real-world medical settings in the region they are preparing to serve,鈥 said Emily Bauer, community engagement coordinator for 国产传媒鈥檚 Department of Medical Education (DOME). 鈥淥ur team has worked closely with organizations like Sutter to establish these opportunities, and we鈥檙e proud to see this partnership come to life.鈥</p> <p>Each participating student will make the hourlong journey from Merced to Modesto each week to shadow clinicians in primary care and other specialties, often returning to campus just in time for afternoon classes 鈥 a testament to their dedication to serving Valley communities. Dr. Wang, who grew up in the Bay Area and chose 国产传媒 as part of its early graduating classes, reflected on the personal significance of the moment.</p> <p>鈥淭his program unites the two institutions that shaped me as a physician,鈥 Wang said. 鈥湽 taught me to be a trailblazer 鈥 to build something from the ground up. That pioneering spirit is what brought me back to serve the Central Valley and to help create opportunities for those who will follow.鈥</p> <p>Dr. Wang told students his first exposure to medicine came as an undergraduate at 国产传媒, when he began scribing for physicians at Memorial Medical Center. 鈥淭hat front-row seat to health care in the Valley changed my life,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t showed me both the challenges and the promise of medicine here 鈥 and it made me realize that this community deserves better. I wanted to be part of delivering that better care.鈥</p> <p>He also emphasized the enduring values of the profession. 鈥淵ou will not always have the answers,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut what you can always do 鈥 what you must always do 鈥 is be present for your patients. As the saying goes, 鈥楥ure sometimes, relieve often, comfort always.鈥 That's the essence of medicine.鈥</p> <p>The Sutter partnership is one of several clinical collaborations underway as DOME continues to build the SJV PRIME+ pathway. We wanted a speaker who could engage not only our researchers but also our broader community. Kaplan鈥檚 work does exactly that.鈥</p> <p>Kaplan has authored more than 700 publications exploring the use of silk as a biomaterial with applications in medicine, food, agriculture and beyond. His research in regenerative medicine has opened up new possibilities for creating replacement organs and medical technologies while also sparking advances across industries worldwide.</p> <p>Wiebe emphasized that Kaplan鈥檚 career illustrates why fundamental research matters.</p> <p>鈥淚t鈥檚 easy to underplay the importance of basic scientific discoveries,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hat you see with his work is how complicated, technical research in the lab can translate into solutions with real-world impact.鈥</p> <p>Kaplan鈥檚 visit will be more than just a lecture. Trevor Hirst, HSRI鈥檚 executive director, said Kaplan will spend the day meeting with groups of faculty and graduate students across campus. The highlight will be his evening public lecture at the Merced on Main location, followed by a community reception.</p> <p>鈥淭he lecture itself will be about an hour, with time for questions, and then a reception where attendees can meet him,鈥 Hirst said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e hoping that the mixer element brings as much to the community as the talk itself.鈥</p> <p>Hirst said that while Kaplan鈥檚 research is deeply technical, his reputation as an effective communicator makes him an ideal inaugural speaker.</p> <p>鈥淭hink of science communicators like Bill Nye or Carl Sagan,鈥 Hirst said. 鈥淜aplan has that ability to make complex ideas accessible. He helps audiences understand that science isn鈥檛 mysterious 鈥 it鈥檚 just people, people like them, doing the work.鈥</p> <p>The event also reflects a broader effort by UC campuses to highlight the value of research at a time when federal funding faces increasing uncertainty.</p> <p>鈥淭hat鈥檚 exactly the idea here, that science matters and it matters a lot,鈥 Wiebe said. 鈥 Kaplan鈥檚 work shows how discoveries in the lab can lead to innovations in medicine, agriculture and so many other fields. COB3 will include a performing arts auditorium and two lecture halls. The Field Education and Research Center will be located adjacent to the Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve and provide a space for students and researchers to explore the local ecosystem.</p> <p>Visitors are encouraged to engage with the different displays, beginning with a vintage drafting table. Over two decades, the library has hosted a variety of exhibitions, including student projects, research showcases, and other works drawn from the university archives.</p> <p>The 国产传媒 Art Gallery, located in the Social Sciences &amp; Management Building, was established in 2011 by Professor ShiPu Wang and has a rich history of giving the campus and surrounding community access to museum-quality art. While there, he quickly guided the program to new heights and led Stevenson to back-to-back postseason trophies and 20+ win seasons in just his third and fourth years on the job. Those two years, 2013-14 &amp;聽聽2014-15, saw the program post its best two-year record in school history. He was named the 2014 Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Coach of the Year. He later became the MAC Commonwealth's active career wins leader.</p> <p>This past season, Stewart became Stevenson men's basketball's all-time winningest coach and he finished his time with 155 wins on the East Coast. Stewart coached two MAC Commonwealth Rookies of the Year, 11 all-league selections, and eight honorable mentions.</p> <p>Stewart is a well-respected leader in collegiate basketball, being appointed as the President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) President in 2022. Currently, he is a Director Emeritus alongside Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo. Stewart has also served on various other NABC and NCAA committees. Outside of basketball, he has been on the administrative staff at Stevenson and Cal State East Bay as an Assistant Athletic Director and Associate Athletic Director.</p> <p>He has also had head coaching stops at UC Davis, Cal State East Bay, and University of La Verne in his tenure. He has taken every program to a conference tournament and has won seven conference championships.</p> <p>Stewart was at the helm of UC Davis from 2003-2011, including during the Aggies reclassification period from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I. He won a Big West Tournament game in just the second eligible season. The following season, he won his 200<sup>th</sup>聽career game. Notable wins while at UC Davis include beating Stanford, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Tulane, Sacramento State, and Boise State. During the transition period, Stewart and UC Davis won more games than any other four-year transition program.</p> <p>Prior to UC Davis, he spent time at the Power 5 level as the Director of Basketball Services for UCLA under Steve Lavin for a season and was an assistant coach at Washington State for three seasons. He also spent a season at UC Santa Barbara. NBA players Cedric Bozeman, Ryan Hollins, Jason Kapono, and Dijon Thompson played at UCLA during Stewart's time in Westwood.</p> <p>Stewart was the head coach at Cal State Hayward (now Cal State East Bay) from 1995-97. In just two years, he made an immediate impact on Cal State Hayward and was named the Northern California Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year and was a nominee for NABC District Coach of the Year honors.</p> <p>He started his head coaching career at his alma mater University of La Verne. From 1987-1995, he tallied 116 wins and three SCIAC championships. He owns the highest men's basketball winning percentage at University La Verne, the most SCIAC championships, and ranks second all-time with his 116 wins.</p> <p>In addition to leading programs, Stewart has coached for Team USA Olympic Team U19 Team Trials, the NABC D1 Reese's All-Star Game, and the Hardwood Classic Tournament held at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.</p> <p>He was named the 2021 Standout Coach by All-In Campus Democracy Challenge and was presented a lifetime achievement award for service recipient in 2016 by President Barack Obama.</p> <p>Stewart was inducted into the University of La Verne Hall of Fame in 2009.</p> <p>As a player at University of La Verne, Stewart was a 4X All-SCIAC honoree and graduated in the Top-10 in nearly every statistical category.
