During college, Dr. Margo Vener was on a completely different career path. Having received a C in chemistry early on, she had all but closed the door on any notion of pursuing a career in medicine. But a conversation with her uncle during her senior year changed all of that.

After telling him she wanted to become a teacher so she could make a difference and really help people in a hands-on way, he suggested it sounded more like she should become a doctor.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 when it clicked,鈥� said Vener. 鈥淚 hadn't thought of it since I ruled it out after I received a C in that class.鈥�

听

At their Nov. 15 meeting, the Regents of the University of California gave final approval for the construction of a new medical education building at 国产传媒. The vote approved the final design, California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) findings and the full budget and financing.

国产传媒 was recently awarded a significant grant from Genentech, a member of the Roche group, to create the 国产传媒 Center for Health Equity. The initiative will focus on eliminating health disparities and advancing health equity throughout the San Joaquin Valley, particularly among the region鈥檚 Hispanic, Latinx, immigrant and rural communities.

Distinguished rankings, new academic offerings, world-class research and campus expansions were among the highlights of the 国产传媒 State of the University address delivered by Chancellor Juan S谩nchez Mu帽oz.

"The state of this 20-year-old institution is unparalleled in the history of American higher education," said Mu帽oz. "And now I would like to invite you to join me in imagining an even more impactful future for our campus, faculty, staff and students."

New students or those who have not yet chosen their majors will have an array of options before them.

Five new majors and several new emphases, ranging across all three schools, are all coming online in 2024 and are recruiting students now.

One of 国产传媒鈥檚 original students, Enid Picart 鈥� soon to graduate from the UCSF San Joaquin Valley Program in Medical Education (SJV PRIME) 鈥� represented the San Joaquin Valley in a big way last week by attending the State of the Union address in Washington, D.C., as the guest of Congressman Jim Costa.

Together, the two reminded people of the need for ongoing medical education in the Valley and of the dedication of many 国产传媒 alumni to give back to their communities.

Dr. Thelma Hurd鈥檚 journey in medicine has taken her from New Jersey to Nigeria, with stops in Texas and Buffalo. Along the way, she gathered experience as a clinician, public health researcher and translational scientist.

Her proficiency in these crucial areas has led Hurd to 国产传媒, where听she became the university鈥檚 director of medical education听last month.
